Safely dispose of household problem waste, free of charge.
Household problem wastes are potentially harmful products that require special collection, treatment, and processing, and therefore cannot be placed in your kerbside bins. NSW householders have convenient collection services to safely dispose of these items free of charge.
What are Community Recycling Centres?
Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) are permanent drop-off facilities for common household problem wastes that cannot be collected through your council’s kerbside waste and recycling bins.
Operating year-round, the community can drop off household quantities of problem waste, free of charge. Sorting problem waste items and taking them to a Community Recycling Centre helps improve recycling rates, saves valuable natural resources, and prevents potentially harmful waste from entering our environment.
Accepted Items (Household Quantities Only):
- Paint (Water & Oil-based): Max 20L per customer per day (in containers no larger than 20L).
- Motor and Cooking Oils: Max 20L per customer per day.
- Batteries: Household and lead-acid (car/motorbike).
- Gas bottles, aerosols, and fire extinguishers.
- Fluorescent, halogen, and LED globes/tubes.
- Smoke detectors and alarms.
Check your local CRC’s website as they may accept some other problem waste types!
Embedded Batteries
Embedded batteries are batteries that are built-in and can’t be removed from the product. Items with embedded batteries include electric toothbrushes, bluetooth speakers, smart watches, vapes, power banks, vacuum cleaners, toys and more.
The NSW EPA is partnering with some CRCs to collect embedded batteries as part of a statewide trial. You can find trial sites marked in the list below or alternatively check the NSW EPA’s website for further details.
Not Accepted Items:
- Household chemicals and cleaners, poisons, solvents, or motor fuels (Please refer to EPA Chemical CleanOut events).
- White goods (fridges, washing machines, air conditioners).
- Building and renovation materials (bricks, tiles, gyprock).
- General household rubbish, cardboard, plastics, or green waste.
- Medical waste.
- Marine flares and distress beacons.
